Why Albanian children are suffering more from stress and anxiety today

Changes in the pace of life have highlighted mental health problems, not only among young people, but also among younger children.

Lack of communication, especially with parents, is one of the most important factors contributing to increased anxiety, stress, and depression.

“I noticed that in the past, children didn't talk about stress, or the term 'stress' wasn't used, as we say today 'I'm stressed', 'I'm nervous', 'I have anxiety', 'I can't stand it'… Today, children experience more stress, face greater academic pressure and have fewer opportunities to communicate with their parents. This lack of communication makes them feel stressed. It's not just school that causes stress; children often want to express their emotions, but they don't have the opportunity to do so properly,” says sociologist Marsida Simo.

A 2024 study by psychologists and researchers at the Public Library of Science shows that parents who connect emotionally and play with their children, developing responsible and mature personalities, have children with high self-esteem, inner joy, and empathy. These children are more cheerful and happy.

"Parents try to do their best, but the fast pace of life often forces them to focus only on material needs, leaving aside emotional aspects. It is essential to understand the importance of emotional intelligence, so that our children develop social skills, empathy and know how to interact in society," adds Simo.

Research by UNICEF experts shows that up to 20% of adolescents worldwide experience mental disorders, and three out of four adult mental health problems begin in childhood and adolescence./Euronews Albania
