SCANDAL IN NIKAJ-MĒRTUR? Fadromats enter the river, residents: No one has told

At a time when Albania is standing up to protect Zvernec, Rrjoll and many other natural spaces, an intervention is taking place in Nikaj-Mërtur that has deeply concerned the residents of the area.

For about a week, the dredgers have begun interventions in the bed of the Mërtur River. According to the information gathered and my sources, excavations are being carried out and three concrete dams are being built, of very worrying dimensions.

There is great concern, not only about the intervention itself, but also about the lack of transparency. There are no information boards in the area, no public notices, and residents say they have not been informed of the exact purpose of these works.

Nikaj-Mërturi has been waiting for vital investments for over 30 years. Many villages still face a lack of infrastructure, dilapidated roads, electricity problems, schools that have been closed, and health services that are shrinking year after year.

Meanwhile, the road from Ura e Tetajve to Ura e Mërtur, only about 2 kilometers long and used by residents of five villages, continues to remain in an unacceptable condition.

For this very reason, many residents are surprised by the fact that interventions are being made in the river, while the most vital problems of the area continue to remain unresolved.

Is this a protective project against soil deposition in the lake? Is this the first step towards the construction of other hydroelectric power plants? So far, there has been no public and official clarification.

What is known is that the Mërtur River has undergone continuous changes over the years, while its flows have been significantly reduced by the hydroelectric power plant granted under concession. For this reason, each new intervention raises legitimate questions and concerns about the future of one of the most important natural assets of Nikaj-Mërtur.

Residents are demanding clear answers: What is being built? Who approved the project? What is the environmental impact? And above all, what future awaits the river that has been the heart of this area for generations.
