Is it good to keep the shutters closed during hot days?

When temperatures outside reach 35–40°C, many people close their shutters all day, thinking that this will keep their home cool. But experts say that it's not enough to simply lower the shutters; it's also important when and how you use them.

The mistake most people make

Many people close their shutters completely and leave them that way for hours. The problem is that a layer of air is created between the glass and the shutter. If it is closed completely, the sun's heat can turn that space into a kind of "mini-greenhouse", causing some of the heat to pass into the interior of the house.

For this reason it is recommended:

Do not completely close the ventilation holes of the grilles.

Leave a small space below them for air circulation.

Avoid completely attaching the grille to the glass during very hot days.

What is the best solution?

The main rule is simple:

Keep the blinds down when the sun is directly on the windows and when it is hotter outside than inside.

Open or freeze when the outside temperature becomes lower than the inside temperature, especially in the evening, at night, and early in the morning.

So, the battle is not against light, but against the heat that enters through the windows.

Rooms should not be treated the same.

South- and west-facing windows receive more sunlight and need more protection. In these environments, blinds should be used more carefully during the midday and afternoon hours.

On the other hand, windows on the north side receive less sun and can be left open more to take advantage of natural light.
