It is suspected that 3 million euros were stolen, the director of the Post

The director of the Post Office branch in Durres, Elisabeta Mataj, has been dismissed, while it is learned that she has been reported for criminal prosecution by the managers of the Albanian Post Office, following an inspection carried out at the Durres branch for abuses.

The announcement of the inspection at the Durrës branch was given by the Albanian Post itself, which stated that irregularities and violations were found in the administration of funds related to payment services and that, after this, it took immediate administrative measures against the responsible employees, as well as referred the case to the prosecutor's office, filing a criminal report.

From reliable sources, Top Channel has learned that there is a suspicion of abuse of 3 million euros. When the cash register was reconciled at the end of the month, initially around 1 billion lekë was found to be missing. Later, during a more in-depth analysis, it was revealed that the value of the shortages was even greater.

Meanwhile, it is learned that the head of finance, Valbona Hoti Duni, has also resigned immediately.

The Albanian Post itself has reacted with an official announcement stating "Albanian Post sh.a. informs the public that, within the framework of its internal control mechanisms and financial monitoring procedures, the General Directorate, through the Economic Directorate, based on discrepancies found during the reconciliation of funds and financial reporting, has exercised an audit of the Durrës Branch.

The verifications conducted have identified irregularities and violations in the administration of funds related to payment services. We emphasize that these funds have no connection with pension funds or pensioner payments.

Immediately after discovering these irregularities, the Albanian Post took immediate administrative measures against the responsible employees, and referred the case to the Prosecution Service, filing a criminal report accompanied by the relevant documentation.

The Albanian Post is fully cooperating with law enforcement agencies, making available any information and documentation necessary for the full clarification of the circumstances of the case. The assessment of individual responsibilities and the taking of further procedural steps are the responsibility of the competent justice authorities.

This case demonstrates the effective functioning of the internal control mechanisms of the Albanian Post, which enabled the identification of irregularities and their immediate referral by the institution itself to the competent authorities.

The Albanian Post remains committed to implementing a zero-tolerance policy towards any violation of the law, abuse of office or abuse of the institution's funds. Integrity, transparency and protection of the public interest remain non-negotiable priorities of the institution.”

Elisabeta Mataj was appointed head of the Durrës post office branch in October 2025, after the previous head, Etleva Budini, won the parliamentary mandate in the May 11 elections, where she competed on open lists./tch
