Salmonella alert in Greece, 17 people hospitalized! Authorities: Do not consume

The chairman of the scientific council of the Hellenic Public Health Organization, Theodoros Vasilakopoulos, spoke this morning (July 14) about the situation in Lamia, Greece, due to salmonella cases, saying that "the way to stop it is to not eat anything if there is chicken for 2-3 days."

He even estimated that there will be more cases, emphasizing that there is no need to panic. As he told ERT, “since there will be more cases until this is over, there is no need to panic. Until we are sure what happened and it is documented, let's not consume any more chicken in Lamia.”

Explaining why new cases are expected, he said that "the incubation period is 3-4 days, so someone could have consumed the amount and developed symptoms later."

The chairman of the scientific council of the Hellenic Public Health Organization attributed the number of hospitalized patients to the increased sensitivity of doctors to cases diagnosed with salmonella due to the publicity given to the case.

“The citizens of Lamia can be sure that in a short period of time they will be able to eat chicken without fear,” concluded Theodoros Vasilakopoulos. The supplier of the chickens that were consumed and are suspected of causing salmonella outbreaks in Lamia has been identified, according to what the Deputy Regional Governor of Health of Central Greece, Andreas Toulias, told STAR Central Greece. However, he noted that it is important to identify both the intermediary and the breeding unit.

“We sent a supervisor with a veterinarian and are checking all the food premises from which the suspicious chickens left, we checked all the employees. We are targeting the supplier. We found it, we took raw chickens and sent them to a laboratory in Halkida, we are trying to find the end of the thread because there is a final supplier, an intermediary and the breeding unit.”

"I believe we will not have any more cases, chicken is a treacherous food, especially in the summer. "We have determined where it comes from and are trying to prevent it from being available again, and I believe we have caught it," Toulias concluded.

According to 'lamiareport', as of Tuesday morning, 17 people were still hospitalized at Lamia Hospital, in the Clinic or in short-term hospitalization, of whom 13 are under 31 years old. Among them is an 8-year-old boy and his father who consumed ready-made food over the weekend, who are expected to be discharged from the hospital during the day.

The cases report consumption of ready-to-eat food, mainly chicken, from at least five different stores.
