Heatwave hits Germany, over 5,400 heat-related deaths

The intense heat wave that swept through Germany at the end of June may have caused more than 5,400 excess deaths, according to preliminary data published by the Federal Statistical Office.
During the last week of June, 5,486 more deaths were recorded than the average for the same period for the years 2022–2025.

This period coincided with the peak of extreme temperatures, when in some regions of the country the thermometer exceeded 41 degrees Celsius.

Experts emphasize that high temperatures pose a great risk, especially for the elderly and people with chronic diseases.

Extreme heat can exacerbate existing health problems and significantly increase the risk of mortality.

Germany was among the European countries hardest hit by the heat wave, which brought new temperature records in some areas.

Scientists warn that, as a result of climate change, heat waves are becoming more frequent, longer and more intense, increasing the risk to public health and putting pressure on health systems.
