Erdogan's strange gift to NATO leaders

An unusual gift has attracted attention during the NATO summit in Ankara, where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presented the alliance's leaders with personalized pistols with their names engraved on them.

According to European media reports, the weapons were also accompanied by boxes of real ammunition, a choice that has caused surprise, as usually diplomatic gifts at such meetings are symbolic and not weapons.

The case was made public by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who said he was unable to take his pistol with him to the UK, as importing such a weapon is against British law. His gift will remain in Ankara and is expected to be deactivated.

Starmer said Erdogan had secured a personal document that facilitated procedures for exporting the weapon from Turkey, but this was not enough to overcome British legal restrictions.

It is not yet clear whether other NATO leaders have faced the same problem receiving the gift.

In addition to the pistol, summit participants also received more traditional gifts, including a deluxe edition of the book "The Politics of Courage: Erdogan and the Rise of Turkey," as well as notebooks and pens personalized with the leaders' names.
