Trump orders suspension of trade with Spain: We no longer want business

US President Donald Trump has declared that the US will cut off trade relations with Spain, reigniting his ongoing clash with Madrid over defense spending within NATO.

"Spain is a lost cause. We don't want to do business with Spain anymore," Trump said before a meeting with NATO leaders in Ankara.

He even addressed US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, urging him to implement the trade freeze.

The clash between Trump and the Spanish government is mainly related to NATO's new target of increasing defense spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product by 2035. Spain has been the only allied country that has not supported this target, causing dissatisfaction with the American president.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Madrid, accusing it of not contributing enough to the military alliance. He has previously threatened tariffs on Spain in retaliation.

However, it remains unclear how such a decision could be implemented, as Spain is part of the European Union and trade policy is decided at the EU level, not by individual states.

Relations between the two countries have also been strained over differing positions on the conflict in Iran. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has opposed Trump's decision to intervene militarily and has refused to use US military bases in Spain for the operation.

"Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don't participate, they don't pay. I don't want anything to do with Spain anymore," Trump declared, adding that Madrid would change its stance when it again seeks trade relations with the US.
