Drastic changes after the Orban era, Hungarian media temporarily stops

Hungarian state television said on Tuesday that news broadcasts had been temporarily suspended as the new government of Peter Magyar is reorganizing the public service media to make it "independent and trustworthy."

The main state television channel M1 posted the announcement on a black screen, displaying the message:

“Public service media cannot lie. However, we apologize for having done so for many years. Public media is now transforming itself to be independent and trustworthy in the future. News coverage has been temporarily suspended. Stay with us.”

The moves are in line with Prime Minister Peter Magyar's election promise to reorganize state media and ban what he called "propaganda" under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Magyar, whose party toppled Orban's nationalist Fidesz party after 16 years in power in April elections, has begun reorganizing Orban's main strongholds of power, including state media. He has said he will restore checks and balances and fight corruption.

"It is a historic day, as the broadcasting of propaganda has ended in public service media," Magyar said in a Facebook post on Tuesday, adding that state-run Radio Kossuth has also stopped broadcasting.
