Etna erupts again, ash covers Sicily and flights to Catania suspended

The Etna volcano in Sicily erupted again on Sunday, spewing a large ash cloud that spread over surrounding areas and caused air traffic disruption at Catania airport.

Airport authorities announced that airspace in the area was severely restricted until 19:00 local time, affecting both takeoffs and landings. As a result, some flights were delayed or temporarily suspended for safety reasons.

According to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), volcanic activity began early in the morning, when ash emissions were recorded from a vent at the top of the volcano.

Later in the day, the eruption intensified, forming an ash column that rose about 1.5 kilometers above the crater.
