"Der Standard: Police used force against protesters, human rights

The well-known German media outlet "Der Standard" has echoed the citizen protest that has been taking place in front of the Prime Minister's Office for 36 days, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Rama.

The media refers to the report of the Albanian Helsinki Committee which condemned the use of disproportionate force by the police against protesters in front of Parliament.

"Human rights organizations in Albania have raised concerns about excessive use of force by police during ongoing protests against a construction project in the protected area of Zvërnec... Isolated incidents cannot justify violent intervention against protesters and are calling for an independent and effective investigation into the events," German media wrote.

During the recent clashes in front of the parliament in Tirana, injuries were recorded among both protesters and police forces, in an escalating situation of tension.

The protests initially began against a project to build a luxury complex in the Zvërnec area, which, according to international media, is linked to the family of US President Donald Trump.

The project, presented earlier, has sparked reactions since the moment fences were placed in the area and preliminary works began, while the protests have subsequently expanded into a broader social movement.

Over time, the demonstrations have also included broader social and economic concerns, including corruption, the cost of living, health problems and low pensions, while in some cases demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama have also been articulated, writes "Der Standard".
