Rubbing your eyes can lead to permanent vision problems.

A new study showed that rubbing your eyes may provide a sense of relief, but at the same time increases the risk of corneal damage and infection, according to "Science".

Although eye rubbing often seems harmless, it can have consequences for the delicate structure of the eye, especially the cornea – the transparent layer at the front of the eye.

This action is usually triggered by allergies, dry eyes, fatigue, or irritation. For a moment, it can bring relief because it stimulates tear production and activates pressure-sensitive nerves around the eye.

However, rubbing your eyes can transfer bacteria and viruses from your hands to your eyes, increasing the risk of infections such as conjunctivitis (eye infection).

When done forcefully, rubbing can cause corneal abrasions, damage to small blood vessels, and a temporary increase in pressure inside the eye.

The biggest concern is related to frequent and strong friction over a long period of time.

Studies have linked this habit to keratoconus – a condition where the front surface of the eye thins and deforms into a cone shape, causing distorted vision.

This does not mean that a light, accidental rub immediately damages the eyes.

But doctors emphasize that frequent rubbing is a habit that should be avoided.

To soothe eye irritation, safer alternatives are recommended, such as artificial tears, allergy treatment, cold compresses, and proper eye care.

The referenced study is a scientific review, conducted by a team of ophthalmologists led by Dr. Hatim Najmi and his co-authors, from medical institutions in Saudi Arabia.

This review was based on the analysis of 24 existing studies on this connection.

The study was published in the scientific journal "International Journal of Ophthalmology", an international journal specialized in the field of ophthalmology.
