Electric cars are becoming more and more popular! Estimates: Around 23 million will be sold in 2026

The global electric car market is growing much faster than expected. In 2019, only one in 100 cars sold was electric, compared to one in four last year.
In May of this year, 63 percent of new cars in China were electric. In addition to China, there is momentum in Europe, but sales are also growing in other regions.
However, the overall share is still low - there are 1.4 billion cars on the road worldwide, of which 85 million are electric.
China in first place
China is the world's largest car market and has been encouraging electric vehicles for years. The country has long invested in future technologies such as solar and wind power, as well as battery technology, a key element of electromobility.
Thanks to advanced research and mass production, batteries for electric cars are becoming cheaper and today cost only a quarter of what they did ten years ago.
In China, electric cars will be cheaper than diesel and gasoline cars by 2024. The government is expanding charging infrastructure, and electricity is very cheap.
Electric or hybrid?
Two-thirds of the world's electric cars run solely on electricity and are charged via a cable. A third are hybrid vehicles that also have an additional gasoline engine to support them over longer distances.
In a plug-in hybrid, both motors can power the car. In so-called Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs), the wheels are powered solely by the electric motor. When the battery is discharged, the internal combustion engine is switched on to generate electricity for the electric motor and increase the range.
There are also so-called HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicles), which are not counted as electric cars in international statistics. They run on gasoline or diesel and have a very small electric motor without a plug. This slightly reduces fuel consumption in city driving and on very short distances.
In the EU, every third new car is now electric
In 2018, the share of electric cars in new registrations in the EU was just one percent. By April 2026, almost every third new car was electric.
Electromobility has developed particularly well in Northern Europe. In Norway, almost all new cars are now electric (99 percent), in Denmark 82 percent and in Sweden 65 percent. Governments have long been promoting climate-friendly mobility, and the charging infrastructure is well developed and continues to expand.
In Europe, most electric cars still cost more than 20,000 euros, but the range of cheaper models is growing. A number of countries continue to offer incentives that further make them more affordable.
Batteries are much better
Previously, high-end electric cars could only travel 500 kilometers on a single charge, and fast charging options were limited.
Today, some models can reach more than 800 kilometers. The infrastructure continues to expand and there are more and more fast chargers. According to the manufacturer, a BYD model can be charged for an additional 700 kilometers in ten minutes with a so-called flash charger.
Common fast chargers, for example at gas stations, provide around 300 kilometers of range in about 20 minutes, while a wall-mounted station at home takes several hours to do so.
Electric cars are more efficient
Electric motors are significantly more efficient because they convert energy directly into motion. About 80 percent of the energy is used and 20 percent is lost as heat.
With gasoline engines, the opposite is true: about 80 percent of the energy is lost during combustion and only 20 percent is used for propulsion, while with diesel engines, the figure is about 40 percent.
This is why an electric car uses less: about 15 kilowatt-hours per hundred kilometers, while a comparable gasoline vehicle uses about 50 kWh, which means about six liters of fuel.
Charging at home is usually cheaper. In Europe and the US in 2024, it was more than 40 percent cheaper than at gas stations, and globally up to 60 percent. Charging at public fast chargers is significantly more expensive, but even without charging at home, driving an electric vehicle is on average about 15 percent cheaper than driving a gasoline or diesel vehicle.
Expensive oil
High oil prices due to the war with Iran and falling battery prices will further accelerate the sale of electric vehicles, the IEA estimates.
According to estimates, about 23 million electric cars will be sold in 2026, almost 30 percent of all new vehicles in the world. The trend is still growing. According to Bloomberg's forecast, by 2030 the share of electric cars could reach 38 percent, and by 2035 to 52 percent, in global new vehicle sales./ DW
