The prestigious 'France 24' echoes the protests: Tear gas and arrests

The prestigious French channel 'France 24' has paid attention to the protests that have been taking place in Tirana for more than a month against the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama, emphasizing the clashes between protesters and police forces.

In its article, as politiko.al writes, the French media describes the use of tear gas, irritant spray, and pressurized water to disperse the crowd, as well as the detention of dozens of protesters.

"Clashes between protesters and police intensified on Thursday in Tirana, as protests against a luxury tourist project linked to the family of US President Donald Trump continue to broaden their scope, transforming into a broader movement against the government.

Protests began in late May against the construction of a luxury resort linked to Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, in the Zvërnec protected area in southwestern Albania. Since then, they have turned into daily protests against corruption, the government and the way strategic investments are managed.

For the second time this week, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of Parliament, attempting to block the building's entrances. Police set up barricades and used tear gas, pepper spray and water cannons to disperse the crowd, while protesters threw stones, eggs and other objects at officers.

According to authorities, several police officers were injured in the clashes, while dozens of protesters were detained. Protesters, for their part, accuse the police of excessive use of force.

The Albanian government has defended the project, arguing that it will impact the country's economic development and help Albania position itself in the luxury tourism market, at a time when it is aiming for membership in the European Union.

However, opponents of the project warn that the construction endangers one of the country's most important ecosystems, home to protected habitats for flamingos and migratory birds. They are calling for the project's cancellation and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, calling the investment a symbol of corruption and lack of transparency , the article says.
