Mexico's World Cup qualification celebrations turn into tragedy, three fans

Massive celebrations for Mexico's qualification to the round of 16 of the World Cup ended with a tragic outcome in Mexico City, where three people died from asphyxiation among the large crowd of fans.

According to the health authorities of the Mexican capital, the incident occurred near the symbolic Angel of Independence monument, where thousands of citizens had gathered to celebrate the 2-0 victory over Ecuador.

In the first announcement, the Health Secretariat announced that, despite the efforts of medical teams to bring them back to life, a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old girl lost their lives, both victims of asphyxiation.

A third victim was confirmed shortly afterwards, a 48-year-old woman who fell ill near the celebration area. She was rushed to hospital but did not survive.

Hundreds of thousands of fans took to the streets to celebrate the historic success of the national team, which achieved its first victory in a direct elimination match at the World Cup in four decades.
