The number of deaths in Albania continued to decline during 2025, but not all causes of mortality followed the same trend.

Official data from INSTAT show that, while total deaths decreased by 3.2% compared to 2024, several groups of diseases and causes recorded significant increases.

In total, 21,394 deaths were recorded during 2025, or 708 fewer than the previous year.

Although circulatory system diseases remain the leading cause of death in the country, they fell by 3.2%, to 11,321 cases. Also declining were deaths from tumors (-2.7%), unspecified symptoms and diseases (-6.1%), and respiratory diseases, which decreased by 13.3%.

However, some categories recorded increases. The largest increase in numbers was observed in deaths from traumatic injuries and poisonings, which increased by 46 cases, reaching 711 deaths, or 6.9% more than in 2024.

Likewise, deaths from diseases of the central nervous system and sensory organs increased by 45 cases, or 13.8%, while those related to endocrine and nutritional diseases increased by 15.3%, reaching 241 cases.

Deaths from diseases of the urogenital organs (+6.6%), mental illnesses (+7.1%) and infectious and parasitic diseases (+29.4%) were also on the rise, although these categories represent a relatively small number of cases.

The highest percentage increase was recorded for complications during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, which increased from 2 to 10 cases, or by 400%. However, experts usually interpret this as an effect of the very low comparative base and not as a broad change in trend.

On the other hand, the strongest decline was recorded in deaths from diseases that appear in the period around birth (-30.3%), while congenital anomalies decreased by 54.5%. Deaths from diseases of the skin and cellular tissue in the skin dropped to zero cases in 2025.

Overall, the data show that the mortality profile in Albania continues to be dominated by chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases and tumors. However, the increase in deaths from traumatic injuries, neurological and endocrine diseases signals a partial change in the structure of causes of mortality, despite the overall downward trend in the total number of deaths./ Monitor
