Politico: "Flamingo Revolution" Escalates, MEPs Support Protest

Protests known as the “Flamingo Revolution” in Albania escalated on Tuesday, with clashes between protesters and police in the capital, just a day after MEPs expressed support for the movement during their visit to Tirana, writes Politico .

Six protesters were arrested, marking a turnaround from the largely peaceful protests that had lasted for 31 days. The protesters were initially opposing a luxury resort project on the South Coast linked to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

As the weeks passed, their demands have expanded to include the resignation of the government and opposition, the repeal of investment and environmental laws that they consider favorable to projects that damage nature, as well as the demand for the creation of a caretaker government.

On Sunday, Italian MEP Ilaria Salis took part in the protest, followed on Monday by German MEP Jutta Paulus and Dutch MEPs Tineke Strik and Anna Strolenberg. They addressed the crowd, expressing support for the protesters and calling for a halt to the resort project.

Salis described the movement as an "important example of grassroots democracy," emphasizing that it has "European and global significance" as an opposition to a development model that, according to her, favors private interests over communities and the environment.
