Extreme heatwave tests healthcare systems in Europe

Health systems in several European Union countries are facing increased pressure as a result of the heat wave that has swept the continent, bringing record temperatures both during the day and at night.

In France , health authorities have declared that the first cases of loss of life are being recorded and the situation has passed into an emergency phase, activating the special Orsan response plan. This plan allows authorities to mobilize additional medical staff, coordinate hospitals and postpone non-urgent interventions to cope with the increasing influx of patients.

According to the French Ministry of Health, the number of calls to emergency services has increased by 15 to 20 percent, while in some cities such as Paris and Rennes this increase reaches up to 40 percent. In Paris alone, 25 cases of cardiac arrest were recorded within 24 hours, a figure significantly higher than the daily average.

In the United Kingdom, authorities are also reporting huge pressure on the healthcare system. According to estimates, up to 4,000 surgical procedures could be canceled during the hottest days of the week, due to difficult conditions in hospitals and an increase in emergency cases.

London ambulance services have reported the highest number of "life-threatening" emergencies ever recorded in a single day, directly linking it to the extreme temperatures sweeping the British capital.
