Malta seizes food shipment from Albania: No documents and no temperature control

The Food Safety and Security Authorities in Malta have seized and subsequently decided to destroy a quantity of food products coming from Albania, after finding serious violations of food safety rules.

The cargo was identified after a van that had arrived by ferry from Sicily was flagged by the Tax and Customs Authority on Friday evening. Immediately after the alert, a check was carried out by the authorities responsible for food safety.

During the inspection, various food products were discovered, including meat, dairy products, snacks, olive oil, soft drinks, eggs, beans, salt and juices, which were deemed not to comply with food safety standards.

According to Maltese authorities, the products were transported at inappropriate temperatures and without the legally required labeling, while essential traceability documents were also missing.

It was also pointed out that the authorities had not been notified in advance of the arrival of the cargo, as required by domestic legislation.

After verification, the food was immediately seized and it was decided to destroy it for public safety reasons.
