Europe is facing a severe heatwave as experts warn that climate change is pushing temperatures to increasingly extreme levels. According to the Copernicus climate service, Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world, at a rate twice the global average.

High temperatures have brought frequent heat waves during the summer, pressure on water resources and a greater risk of fires.

As a result of the extreme heat, two of Paris' most iconic monuments, the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower, closed their doors earlier than usual.

Meanwhile, images are circulating on social media illustrating the intensity of the heat. In a video filmed in France, a citizen takes a frying pan out on the windowsill and manages to fry eggs and bacon using only the heat of the sun, a scene that has gone viral and is being used as a symbol of the scorching temperatures that have engulfed the country.
