Protesters seek ambassadors' support, letter with five demands revealed

 

The civic movement, which has been organizing daily protests against the government and Prime Minister Edi Rama for 27 days, has taken a new step, by sending an official letter to the ambassadors and heads of missions of countries accredited in Albania, informing them about the protest demands and the political situation in the country.

In the letter, the coordinators state that they represent a broad civic and peaceful movement, which for 27 days has mobilized citizens in defense of democracy, the rule of law, and human dignity.

"Albania is at a defining moment in its democratic development. Citizens peacefully gathered in public squares across the country are exercising their fundamental right to civic expression, guided by a deep commitment to the rule of law, democratic governance, and human dignity," the letter states.

The Coordination Group presents five demands that, according to it, represent the will of the protesters, starting from the non-negotiable resignation of the Prime Minister and the government, the creation of a transitional, non-partisan technical government with a 12-month mandate, constitutional amendments approved by popular referendum, which include reforming the Electoral Code, the law on financing political parties and limiting the prime minister's mandate to no more than two terms during political life. internationalized its action. They also demand the cancellation of the changes to the law on protected areas, the law on cultural heritage, the repeal of the Mountain Package and the legal framework for strategic investments.

The fifth point is the drafting of a new social contract between citizens and the state, through consultations with intellectuals, experts, and representatives of non-partisan civil society.

At the end of the letter, the Coordination Group calls on the ambassadors to consider the seriousness of the protest and to support a peaceful, democratic and inclusive solution to the political situation in Albania.
