International academics support mass protests in Albania

Through a public letter in support of the mass protests recently taking place in Albania, 260 international academics, students, and professors from around the world expressed solidarity with Albanians' demands for environmental protection, government accountability, and the establishment of the rule of law.

"Citizens of the country as well as the diaspora have mobilized to oppose the approval of plans to develop luxury tourism on the island of Sazan, within the protected area of Karaburun-Sazan as well as that of Vjosa-Narta," the public letter reads.

Through this letter, the academics described this movement as a critical moment for Albania, when protests are expanding beyond the environmental cause.

Over the past 25 days, what began as a protest against the Zvërnec project has now transformed into an anti-government movement, also known as the "Flamingo Revolution."

The academics' letter highlights the fact that for the first time in decades, citizens of different political persuasions and social backgrounds have come together regardless of ideals, in response to the lack of transparency, corruption, weakening of democratic institutions, state capture, and the absence of the rule of law.

"Despite the government's continued efforts to discredit this movement, it has remained peaceful, non-militant, and civic, bringing together environmental activists, academics, students, civil society actors, and concerned citizens for the cause," the message from the international academics is quoted as saying.

Academics express their support for the protesters' demands, writing that these demands coincide with environmental protection, democratic accountability, legality, and the protection of the public interest.

The letter also specifically lists the protesters' demands which clearly articulate calls for the cancellation of the Sazan and Vjosa-Narta projects, the resignation of the Prime Minister, the withdrawal of the Law on Strategic Investors, the withdrawal of the Mountain Package, the withdrawal of the amendments to the Law on Protected Areas, as well as the withdrawal of the amendments to the Law on Cultural Heritage.
