A DJ who has performed at some of Ibiza's most popular nightclubs has been identified as the main suspect ("mastermind") behind an international drug trafficking operation.

According to Mixmag and Diario de Ibiza, the suspect is believed to be Argentine DJ Hugo Bianco, who was previously a household name on the Ibiza nightlife scene, performing at Marco Carola's "Music On" events as well as clubs such as Amnesia, Pacha Ibiza and Destino. He has also been part of the line-ups at Unum Festival in Albania, 93 Feet East in London and BPM Festival in Costa Rica.

According to a court ruling, the joint investigation by the Spanish Guardia Civil and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in the US, called "Operation Pertinax", has revealed that Bianco is suspected of being the main organizer of a drug trafficking network that moved significant quantities of MDMA, cocaine, ketamine and cannabis to the Balearic Islands during the period September 2019 - August 2020.

Part of the shipments is suspected to have been then transported to Miami by recruited couriers, who hid the narcotics in luggage and containers that appeared legitimate.

Investigations show that Bianco used his connections in Ibiza and Miami, where he regularly performed, to create a drug transport and distribution network between Spain and the United States. He is also suspected of providing “logistical support” to the operation from his apartment in Barcelona.

Authorities have declared the 54-year-old, who is believed to be currently in Florida, a "fugitive from justice," along with two other people involved in the case.

Last week, the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJB) upheld a sentence of nine years and six months in prison for Bianco. The decision confirmed an earlier ruling by the Provincial Court, finding him guilty of drug trafficking, participation in a criminal organization and electricity fraud.

The TSJB rejected the defense's claims that Bianco did not have a central role in the trafficking network and also accepted as evidence the phone taps used by investigators.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court also imposed a fine of 3 million euros. He has not yet publicly reacted to the decision.
