Heatwave hits France, at least 40 dead

At least 40 people have died in France in recent days after they went swimming in unsupervised areas in an attempt to cool off from the heatwave that has gripped the country and other parts of Europe, Al Jazeera reports .

After a special crisis meeting, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated that the death toll, recorded since Thursday, mainly includes young people.

"They are the first victims of the crisis we are facing," he said, calling the situation a "tragic wound."

Earlier, Sports Minister Marina Ferrari warned citizens to avoid swimming in unauthorized areas during extreme temperatures, stressing that the risk increases significantly in such conditions.

Meanwhile, local authorities in southeastern France announced that the heatwave is also suspected of causing the deaths of two children, aged 2 and 4, who were found unconscious in a vehicle near their home in Carpentras.

Also, in the Bordeaux region, three elderly people, aged between 80 and 95, lost their lives as a result of health problems related to high temperatures.

France is facing one of the strongest heatwaves in recent years, as authorities continue to appeal for maximum caution and avoidance of unnecessary exposure to extreme temperatures.
