Cyberattacks on businesses, Hita: 10 thousand social media accounts are being

The Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, stated that the Police structures are investigating a suspected coordinated activity in cyberspace, which according to him aims to damage the online reputation of tourism businesses in Albania.

In a press conference, Hita announced that in recent days, massive publications of negative comments and evaluations towards hotels, restaurants and other tourism entities have been identified on international platforms.

According to the head of the Police, preliminary verifications have revealed indications of the existence of a network of accounts that have been operating in a synchronized manner. He said that up to this stage, over 10,000 accounts with suspicious activity patterns have been identified, which are being verified by specialized structures.

Hita stressed that some of these profiles are suspected to have been newly created for this purpose, while others are real accounts, for which investigative actions have been initiated. According to him, cases have been found where the same account has published negative comments about businesses in different cities of the country within a very short time interval.

"These elements are being analyzed to determine whether we are dealing with an organized activity aimed at creating a false perception and damaging the reputation of Albanian businesses," Hita declared.

He warned that, if the suspicions are confirmed, the materials will be referred to the Prosecutor's Office for criminal offenses related to computer crimes and damage to economic interests.
