Switzerland breaks 72-year wait, eliminates Colombia and advances to World Cup

Switzerland has qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Colombia on penalties in a match that ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of play in Vancouver.

The Swiss return to the top eight of the World Cup for the first time since 1954, when the tournament was held on their home soil.

The match was balanced from the first minute. Colombia appeared more persistent in the attacking phase, with James Rodríguez and Luis Díaz looking for the net several times, but goalkeeper Gregor Kobel proved decisive with his interventions. On the other hand, Camilo Vargas kept the Colombians in the game by neutralizing the efforts of Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye.

Even after the break, the pace remained high, but neither team was able to break the deadlock. Switzerland came close with Ndoye, who wasted a clear chance, while Colombia continued to apply pressure without finding the right finish.

In extra time, the Latin Americans claimed a penalty, but the referee continued the game. The most dangerous moment came from Jhon Lucumí, whose header was stopped by the crossbar. On the other wing, Zeki Amdouni tried from distance, but Vargas reacted correctly.

The winner was decided by a penalty. Davinson Sánchez made the first mistake for Colombia, hitting the crossbar, while Manuel Akanji failed to capitalize on the advantage immediately, sending the ball over the goal. Gregor Kobel's save from Cucho Hernández's penalty proved decisive, opening the way for Rubén Vargas, who took the final shot and secured Switzerland's qualification.

In the quarterfinals, Switzerland will face Argentina, the reigning world champion, while Colombia's adventure in the 2026 World Cup ends in the round of 16.
