Residents of Nikaj-Mërtur protest: The Mërtur River is being damaged

Around 300 residents of the Nikaj-Mërtur district in Tropoja, together with environmental activists, have protested against the construction of three mountain dams on the Mërtur River, a project of the Albanian Electric Power Corporation.

According to residents, the works have begun without prior consultation with the community and without clear public information on the nature of the intervention, raising concerns about a lack of transparency.

Environmentalists warn that the diversion of the river's flow and the excavations carried out along its bed could cause irreversible damage to the area's ecosystem.

Over the last three weeks, according to them, heavy vehicles have encroached on over a kilometer of the riverbed, raising fears of long-term environmental consequences in one of the most sensitive natural areas in the north of the country.
