EU condemns Russia's destabilizing activities in the Western Balkans

The European Union said it opposes Russia's destabilizing activities in the Western Balkans and added that relations with Russia cannot continue as usual while Vladimir Putin's regime continues its aggression against Ukraine.

Responding to a question regarding continued cooperation between the Republika Srpska entity police and Moscow, the European Commission told Radio Free Europe that entities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have the right to develop international cooperation in the areas for which they are responsible, but that they must fully adhere to the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the decisions of state institutions.

"Foreign policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the exclusive competence of the state, while the entities have a constitutional obligation to assist state institutions in fulfilling their obligations," the European Commission's response states.

The Minister of Internal Affairs of the entity of Republika Srpska, Željko Budimir, signed a memorandum of cooperation on June 23 in Moscow with Oleg Baranov, the head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for the city of Moscow, which is sanctioned by the European Union.

This continued the cooperation established more than ten years ago, which foresees the exchange of information, professional training, as well as cooperation in the fight against terrorism and other forms of crime.

The text of the new memorandum has not been made public.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska told Radio Free Europe that it "further concretizes the forms of cooperation in the field of professional training, exchange of experiences and the implementation of joint training."

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 17, in which it condemned the cooperation of the Republika Srpska authorities with Russian officials who are under international sanctions.

The resolution emphasized that such relations pose a threat to the security and stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has officially joined the European Union's sanctions against Russia, but their implementation is opposed by politicians in Republika Srpska, led by Milorad Dodik, president of the ruling party, the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats./ REL
