Albania is flooded with asylum seekers from Egypt and Afghanistan

The number of foreign nationals seeking asylum in Albania has undergone a strong upward trend over the last year.

According to official Instat data, during 2025, 144 asylum requests were registered, or 40 more than in 2024, which indicates an increase in the flow of persons seeking international protection in our country.

If we compare the figures with 2024, it turns out that Albania has recorded an increase in the number of asylum seekers by over 38%.

By country of origin, the largest proportion of asylum seekers are Egyptian citizens, who account for 39.6% of the total. Next in line are citizens from Afghanistan with 11.8% and Palestine with 9.7%, while the rest belong to citizens from other countries.

Asylum applications were not evenly distributed throughout the year. Over 63% of requests were filed during the months of August, September and October alone, making this period the peak of the influx of asylum seekers in Albania.

Meanwhile, regarding the acquisition of Albanian citizenship or passport by foreigners, it results that the majority of persons who acquired Albanian citizenship were originally from Kosovo, which accounted for over 56% of the total. It is followed by Turkey with 20%, while North Macedonia and Italy each represent 4.8% of cases.

Official Instat data shows that during 2025, a total of 495 people acquired citizenship, of which 306 regained it while 189 obtained it for the first time.

In terms of age structure, the 30–39 age group constitutes the largest category among those who acquired Albanian citizenship.

The increase in the number of asylum seekers can be linked to changes in migration flows and the situation in their countries of origin. However, despite this increase, the number of asylum applications in Albania remains relatively low compared to many other European countries.
