Killed in the courtroom, the Judges' Association demands that Judge Astrit

The National Association of Judges has requested that Judge Astrit Kalaja, who was murdered in the courtroom in October 2025, be declared a "Martyr of the Homeland."

In a statement, welcoming the decision of the Shkodra Municipal Council that granted the late judge the status of "Martyr of the Homeland", the Association requested that this decision be recognized and accelerated by other institutions.

According to the judges, recognizing Kala as a "Martyr of the Homeland" is a dignified and legal treatment for a statesman killed in the line of duty.

Appeals Judge Astrit Kalaja was murdered in the courtroom on October 6, 2025. Perpetrator Elvis Shkambi shot and killed the judge during a trial over a property dispute involving his family.

FULL DECLARATION:

The National Association of Judges of the Republic of Albania has followed with interest the decision of the Shkodra District Council to grant the status of "Martyr of the Homeland" to the judge, Mr. Astrit Kalaja, who was killed on October 6, 2025, in the line of duty.


This was one of the unequivocal and unanimous requests of the Conference of Judges held on October 9, 2025 and consequently the decision-making of the Shkodra District Council is welcomed and hailed by the Association as an important step in finalizing the administrative process of recognizing and granting this status.

The National Association of Judges also requests and encourages other competent institutions to conclude as soon as possible the process of recognizing and granting the status of "Martyr of the Homeland" to Judge Mr. Astrit Kalaja, with the conviction that this is the dignified and legal treatment of any statesman who is killed in the line of duty.
