Coach Roberto Martinez leaves Portugal after World Cup elimination

Roberto Martinez will no longer be the coach of the Portugal national team. The Spanish coach has resigned after the team's elimination from the World Cup, following a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the round of 16.

After the match, Martinez announced that his contract had ended and that he would not continue as Portugal coach. He described his departure as "the end of a cycle", acknowledging that his goal was to lead Portugal to success at the World Cup.

The Portuguese Football Federation officially confirmed the separation with the 51-year-old coach, thanking him for the work done during his time in charge of the team.

Martinez took charge of Portugal in January 2023 and had a positive start, securing qualification for the world tournament and winning the Nations League in 2025. However, elimination to Spain in the knockout stage ended his adventure on the Portuguese bench.

Portugal will now begin the search for a new coach, with the aim of opening a new chapter following Martinez's departure.
