What is expected from the NATO Summit in Turkey?

The NATO summit has started with some strong statements from US President Donald Trump, who left open the possibility of selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, while reiterating his interest in controlling Greenland.

Trump said he would soon make a decision on the issue of fighter jets for Ankara. Relations between the US and Turkey over the F-35 program have been strained following Washington's decision to exclude Turkey from the project over its purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system.

During the first day of the summit, Trump also spoke about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, describing her as a "good person," despite previous criticism of her.

One of the main topics of the NATO leaders' meeting is expected to be the commitment to collective defense and increased military spending. Allies are expected to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening defense capabilities, while European countries are trying to show more independence in the continent's security.

The issue of military budgets remains one of the most contentious points. NATO countries have agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product by 2035, but some countries have warned of difficulties in meeting even the current target of 2%.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that during the summit, member countries are signing defense agreements worth "billions of dollars."

The US military presence in Europe will also be a focus of discussions. Trump has repeatedly criticized European allies for their defense spending and has previously threatened to reduce US troops on the continent. However, he did not say whether he would announce new cuts during the summit.

The war in Ukraine is expected to be another major topic of the meeting. Trump expressed optimism about the possibility of a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, while Kiev continues to seek more air defense systems, particularly Patriot missiles, to counter Russian attacks.

Tensions between the US and Iran are also expected to feature in the discussions, particularly over security in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has criticized several NATO countries for their lack of engagement in the standoff between the US, Israel and Iran.

The summit takes place at a time when the alliance faces pressure to increase military capabilities and define its role in global conflicts.
