Euro reaches another historic low, drops to 93.8 lekë

The exchange rate of the lek against the euro is increasingly reflecting seasonal effects. The increase in the flow of tourists has increased the supply of foreign currency in the market, putting further pressure on the common currency.

According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, one euro was exchanged today for 93.78 lekë, depreciating by 0.11 lekë compared to the previous day. This is the lowest historical level ever recorded.

Compared to the beginning of this year, the common currency has depreciated by 3.04%, or almost 3 lekë.

For the period from January 3 to July 8, one euro was exchanged for an average of 95.7 lek, down from 97.8 lek which was the average in 2025.

The decline is even sharper in a long-term comparison. Compared to the 2015 average, when one euro was exchanged for 139.7 lekë, the common currency has depreciated by 31.5%, or about 44 lekë.

Market players claim that the strengthening of the lek is related to a combination of factors. One of them is the flow of informal money that entered the country after 2016 and was channeled mainly into the construction sector.

After 2022, tourism revenues have also had an increasingly greater impact. In 2025, foreign national arrivals in the country exceeded 12 million.

The decline in recent days is mainly related to seasonal effects, as a result of foreign exchange inflows from tourists during the summer season.

The depreciation of the euro has significantly hurt exporters, as well as the tourism sector, which generates a portion of its revenue in euros. It has also reduced the lek value of emigrants' remittances.

On the other hand, the strengthening of the lek has been positive for importers, who need less lek to buy the same amount of goods in foreign currency. The state budget, which pays less for foreign debt service, has also benefited, as have Albanians who travel abroad for vacations or other purposes. /Monitor
