Belgian MEP: Protests in Albania show anger against a system that favors

Belgian MEP Marc Botenga has reacted to recent developments in Albania, expressing concern about planned projects in protected natural areas and the legal changes that, according to him, could pave the way for these investments.

In a public statement, Botenga said that protected habitats, home to species such as pink flamingos, should not be endangered in the name of development projects. According to him, protecting the environment must remain a priority.

The MEP also focused on the protests that have been taking place in Tirana for weeks, describing them as an expression of citizens' dissatisfaction with the way decision-making is done.

According to Botenga, the changes in legislation to enable the development of projects in protected areas are worrying and, according to him, have been undertaken without the necessary transparency.

He also expressed criticism of the European Union institutions, saying that their reaction has been lukewarm, despite the fact that Albania is a candidate country for membership and that the EU promotes environmental protection, the rule of law, and democratic values.

In conclusion, Botenga said that such developments raise questions about how the European integration process, large investment projects, and respect for nature protection standards and institutional transparency are intertwined.
