Citizens in the streets for weeks, German newspaper: Protesters demand

Since the end of May, massive protests have been taking place in Tirana, involving tens of thousands of citizens. Initially initiated as opposition to a luxury project in the south of the country, the movement has expanded, taking on a political character, writes the German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau .

Protesters are demanding a halt to a resort project planned by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, along with an Albanian investor, in a protected area on the Albanian coast. They argue that the project violates natural areas and the public interest.

However, their demands have gone beyond environmental issues, the article continues. The protesters are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has been in power for more than 13 years and publicly supports the project.

Participants from the Albanian diaspora have also been observed in the protests held in the capital, while in recent weeks one of the largest participations has been recorded since the start of the movement.

Albanian authorities have meanwhile initiated criminal proceedings against dozens of protesters.
