Greece tightens measures as number of children with ADHD increases

The Greek government is preparing new strict measures for internet use by minors, while the number of students being expelled from schools for using mobile phones has increased significantly this year.

According to official data, student expulsions for using mobile phones in schools have reached 25,000, compared to 14,806 cases in the previous period, reflecting the authorities' growing concern about the impact of technology on young people.

In this context, the government is promoting a draft law that aims to ban access to social networks for children under the age of 15. The authorities aim for the measure to be fully implemented by January 1, 2027.

The “Kid's Wallet” system will be used to verify the age of users, which will serve as a national mechanism for identification and age control. Online platforms will be required to verify the identity of users before allowing them access to social networks.

Meanwhile, additional protective measures will be put in place for teenagers aged 15 to 18. These include limiting personalized advertising, as well as setting limits on the time spent using digital platforms.
Among teenagers aged 14-17, the percentage of those addicted to their phones is approaching 80% of the population.

Greece thus joins a growing number of countries that are adopting stricter policies to limit minors' access to the internet, in an effort to combat the phenomenon of social media addiction and excessive use of technology.
