Brussels issues arrest warrant for former EU commissioner

A Belgian investigating judge has issued a European arrest warrant for former European Union commissioner and former senior Greek official Dimitris Avramopoulos, a Greek government official confirmed, Reuters reports .

The arrest warrant is related to the corruption scandal known as "Qatargate", which broke out in 2022 and is considered one of the biggest scandals ever to hit the European Union.

According to investigations, several EU officials are suspected of having accepted bribes from Qatar, with the aim of influencing policies and decision-making at the European Union level.

During the investigation, authorities conducted searches and seized around 1.5 million euros in cash, including money found in a suitcase at a Brussels hotel.

Avramopoulos has denied any involvement in the matter.

"There was no direct or indirect involvement on my part in anything illegal," he declared.

He added that he will not use parliamentary immunity and will address the Greek justice system himself.

"On the contrary, I will call on the Greek judiciary itself to fully investigate the matter and make a decision," the former commissioner said.
