Business perception of corruption reaches historic high in AmCham Index

Business perception of corruption in Albania has reached its highest level since the start of measurements by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), indicating a significant deterioration in the climate and integrity in the economy.

According to data presented in the Business Index, 68% of AmCham members rate corruption as high or very high, while only 7% consider it low or very low. A quarter of businesses surveyed hold a neutral stance.

The corruption perception index has fallen to 28.9 points, the lowest level ever recorded in the index's history. The decline comes after a period when the indicator fluctuated mainly between 30 and 40 points, reaching as high as 39.9 points in one of the last measurements.

The data shows that over two-thirds of the business community see corruption as a serious problem, with 42.9% rating it as high and 25.6% as very high. In contrast, positive assessments remain modest.

"This is an alarm signal for institutions, the business community and all stakeholders interested in the competitiveness and investment climate in the country," stated the head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Albania, Neritan Mullaj.

The result constitutes the most negative signal recorded by the American Chamber survey for this indicator and shows that businesses perceive a deterioration in the environment in which they operate, despite the reforms and measures undertaken over the years to strengthen transparency and fight corruption.

The AmCham survey is considered one of the most important measurements of the perception of investors and companies operating in Albania, serving as an indicator of the private sector's trust in institutions and the functioning of the market./ Monitor
