"Fox News" echoes the protest in Tirana: Albanians fill the streets

Prime Minister Edi Rama's government is facing increasing pressure, as protests in Albania continue with calls for his resignation, writes Fox News .

The protests are being sparked by a major project to build a luxury resort on the Albanian coast, linked to investments by Jared Kushner's firm. The project envisages the development of tourist destinations in the areas of Sazan and Zvërnec, with thousands of hotel units and villas.

Officials and supporters of the project consider it an important investment for the Albanian economy, which will bring jobs and tourism development, emphasizing that the projects are in accordance with the law and that some of the areas are state or private property with open court cases.

On the other hand, protesters and critics of the project express concerns about the impact on protected natural areas, including Vjosa–Nartë, an area important for biodiversity and migratory birds.

Agim Nesho, former Albanian ambassador to the US and the UN, states that the protests are not against foreign investors, but against the way of governance.

"Contrary to some misinformation in the media, the protests in Albania are not against President Donald Trump's family or foreign investors like Jared Kushner. These investors are bringing $4 billion to Albania that will create jobs and opportunities for our youth. After 12 years and at least three stolen elections... Rama's days seem numbered," Nesho said.

Eric Czuleger, editor of "The Under Report," who has lived in Albania for five years, says that Rama's government is facing direct pressure from citizens.

"Rama's government has never been under such direct pressure from the Albanian people... Initially he denied the existence of the protests... When they grew, they were suddenly described as a 'hybrid war' instigated by Iran and Russia," the editor said.

Asher Abehsera, chairman of Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, says the project aims for long-term development.

"For four years we have worked to create a world-class destination on the Albanian coast... Our goal is simple: to promote the natural beauty of Albania, create jobs and build something that future generations can be proud of. The future of the project will ultimately be determined by Albania and the Albanian citizens ," he said.

Florjan Binaj, an Albanian actor and artist, who supports the protests, says they are among the largest since 1991.

“These are the largest protests that have taken place in Albania since 1991,” he said,  “the protesters are demanding Rama’s resignation.”

The Albanian government has stated that the project will be subject to in-depth environmental assessments and has denied accusations that the status of protected areas has been changed to favor investment. According to it, Sazani is state property and is not planned to be sold, while in Zvërnec, ownership issues are still in court.

The Rama government did not respond to direct questions regarding the protesters' concerns.
