Tirana has become the 'epicenter' of protests where thousands of citizens have taken to the streets against the project to build a luxury tourist resort, linked to investors close to Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner.

According to political scientist and historian Florian Bieber, who commented on the situation for ZDF , citizens' dissatisfaction is not only related to the construction of the resort, but also to the way public decisions are made in the country.

He emphasizes that the protests encapsulate concerns about a lack of transparency, the influence of private interests, and the risk of corruption.

"There is a fear of the destruction of an important natural area, but also a feeling that projects are being pushed forward without information and without consultation with the public," Bieber said.

He adds that the issue of corruption and lack of transparency is a recurring concern in public debates in Albania, fueling the perception that some projects are developed more in the interest of economic groups than citizens.

The protests, also known as the “Flamingo Revolution,” have been accompanied by calls against the government and demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, ZDF reports. “His style is characterized by autocracy and unlimited power in his country ,” Bieber says.

According to Bieber, public dissatisfaction is also related to the style of governance and the perception of the concentration of power, as well as to the doubts often raised about the sources of financing for some major projects in the country.

He emphasizes that the lack of public debate and transparency reinforces the belief of many citizens that decision-making is not in their best interest.
