Tabaku: Corruption and lack of competition are holding back the Albanian economy

The American Chamber of Commerce in Albania, in collaboration with "Monitor" Magazine, organized today the Business Forum on the topic "How is the economy doing?", where the results of the 14th edition of the AmCham Business Index were also presented.

The forum discussed the performance of economic indicators and the prospects of the private sector, highlighting the challenges facing business in the country.

During the event, DP MP Jorida Tabaku raised concerns about the lack of implementation of reforms and recommendations approved over the years. According to her, a large part of the laws and proposals remain only on paper, with no real effect on the economy.

She also emphasized that corruption remains one of the main problems in the economy, despite the establishment of new institutions. According to her, the level of competition in the market remains low, while the state continues to be the largest economic actor, which according to her should not happen in a functioning market economy.

Tabaku also commented on the devaluation of the euro by about 30%, saying that this factor has negatively affected the economy, especially the agricultural sector and investments. She added that some current laws create special favors, including those for strategic investments, requiring more equality and transparency in the market.

In conclusion, Tabaku emphasized the need for a clear and long-term fiscal code, underlining that the economy cannot rely on temporary measures or actions, but requires sustainable planning and cooperation among all economic actors.

"I see with concern that many of the recommendations and laws remained only on paper, without implementing them. If business is not ready for this legislation, these reforms will remain on paper. Although we have established institutions, corruption remains one of the highest indicators.

The largest operator in the market is the state, but in fact it shouldn't be.

The 30% devaluation of the euro has brought a decline in the economy, in agriculture. This is an eminent risk, as investments have changed.

"Some laws provide special favors, such as for strategic investments. We need a fiscal code. The economy cannot be maintained with shares, as a work plan is needed for all actors to work," said Tabaku.
