France on fire from extreme heat, Europe braces for peak

Europe is facing a severe heatwave, which has particularly hit France, Spain and Italy, while extreme temperatures are expected to spread to other parts of the continent in the coming days.

In France, more than half the country is on red alert for high temperatures, with authorities warning of another day of scorching weather on Wednesday. The situation has also been accompanied by serious infrastructure problems, with tens of thousands of homes in the Brittany region left without electricity.

Meanwhile, in the Maine-et-Loire region, a large forest fire was brought under control overnight, following the intervention of firefighters.

France recorded its hottest day of June on Tuesday since records began, with an average temperature of 29.8°C, according to official data.

Authorities warn that the heatwave will spread towards Western Europe, with orange warnings in place in the Netherlands for dangerous weather conditions.

In the coming days, temperatures are expected to peak in the Netherlands and Belgium, while in Germany the thermometer could climb to 40°C over the weekend.

The heat wave is also expected to affect Eastern Europe, where countries such as Poland, Croatia and Hungary have issued strong warnings for extreme temperatures.

According to French authorities, 40 cases of drowning related to heat conditions have been recorded in France alone since last week.

European authorities are calling on citizens to avoid sun exposure during peak hours and take protective measures against extreme temperatures, while the situation is expected to remain severe in the coming days.
