Protests for Rama's departure, CNN journalist publishes Albanians'

CNN journalist Isa Soares has brought to the attention of the international public the voices of Albanian protesters who have been demanding the removal of Prime Minister Edi Rama for over 3 weeks.

Through a post on social media, Soares announced that she has received dozens of messages from Albanian citizens at home and abroad, who have expressed their concerns and dissatisfaction regarding the political and social situation in Albania. While preserving the anonymity of the authors, she published some of them, where citizens argue that the protests are not only related to the recent debates on development projects, but are the result of a dissatisfaction accumulated over years.

"This was just the moment that spilled the beans," writes one of the protesters, listing as reasons corruption, the massive departure of young people, the lack of meritocracy, the privatization of public assets, and the feeling that citizens are no longer heard by institutions.

Another message describes Edi Rama as a "failed prime minister", accusing him of failing to fulfill his constitutional obligation to guarantee the fair and secure development of the country.

Messages in Albanian:

“But let’s not reduce Albanian anger to just one island. This was just the last straw. Albanians have taken to the streets because of widespread corruption, the mass exodus of young people, poverty, the capture of public institutions, the privatization of public assets, the lack of meritocracy, and the growing sense that the voice of citizens is no longer being heard. The island is just the latest symbol of a frustration that has been building for years.”

“He has failed in his constitutional duty as prime minister to guarantee a safe and just development of our beautiful country.”

“I am deeply disappointed and angry with the Government of Albania for its land grabbing, privatization and destruction of Albania’s protected areas, including the Narta Lagoon, one of the country’s most precious ecosystems and a vital habitat for flamingos. Prime Minister Edi Rama is using the term ‘development’ to mask the destruction of public lands and protected areas, turning them into luxury resort projects in the service of powerful oligarchs with criminal records. The Flamingo Revolution, Albanian citizens, are against the destruction of protected areas, the weakening of environmental protection and the sale of Albania’s natural heritage without proper public accountability. I am outraged and disgusted by Edi Rama’s transactional relationship with the Trump family, attempting to sell Sazan Island just to gain the trust of the Trump family after his previous statements of ‘God save us if Trump wins’, as well as in exchange for his historical connections with the Soros family.”

“What sparked the protest was not just the land grab. It was the absolute power that this government has had for more than 13 years. A power that is used to change laws according to personal interests, while hospitals remain in a very bad state. Cancer patients in public hospitals lack the main medicines for their treatment. Thousands of families in cities other than Tirana live in complete poverty. We are practically living in a dictatorship; the main media outlets have been bought by the government and are no longer independent. People, landowners for more than four generations from the south to the east of the country, are being stripped of their properties. The flamingos were simply the last straw. The main opposition party is complicit with the current government. The flamingos were the last straw. We, the Albanian people, say: enough is enough! ALBANIA IS NOT FOR SALE!”
