From free pools to cool-down spots: How Europe is adapting to historic heatwave

A severe heatwave is sweeping across many parts of Europe, with record temperatures and various emergency measures to help citizens cope with the extreme conditions, writes the BBC .

In the Netherlands , authorities are opening “cool-down spots” in Amsterdam – cool spaces in libraries, theaters, community centers and supermarkets, where people can find water, fresh air and places to rest. Schools are also switching to “tropical” schedules, with shorter days, more breaks and increased ventilation for students.

In France , cities are distributing various relief measures such as free tickets to air-conditioned cinemas for young and old, as well as opening museums and libraries as places to cool off. Some areas have increased access to cool public spaces for citizens.

In Spain , cities such as Zaragoza and Huesca have reduced prices or made public swimming pools free, while in some towns fountains and water sprinklers have been turned on to help people cool off. Some summer events have been cancelled due to the risk of fires and extreme temperatures.

In Italy , the government has reinstated protective measures for workers most exposed to heat, such as those in construction and agriculture, including mandatory holidays or support payments in some cases.

Across the continent, authorities are warning that extreme temperatures are becoming more frequent and dangerous, forcing cities to adapt to new ways of living during the summer.
