They abused economic aid funds, security measures are given to 6 state employees

The Elbasan Prosecutor's Office has cracked down on a fraud scheme with economic aid funds, with a damage of 12.5 million lek to the state budget.

The prosecution ordered security measures for 6 public officials, who are suspected of having illegally included families in the economic assistance scheme.

The security measures "Obligation to report to the judicial police" and "Suspension of exercising a public duty or service" have been imposed on the six suspects, who held positions as social administrator, postman, director of a municipality department and specialists of the Regional Directorate.

They are accused of abuse of office, theft committed by abuse of office, forgery of documents, and unauthorized computer access.

According to the Prosecution, the investigation began after a citizen's report in April 2025 and revealed that in an administrative unit of the Elbasan district, during the period October 2024 - July 2025, numerous violations were committed in the administration of the economic assistance scheme.

"The investigation has been extended only to one Administrative Unit of the Elbasan district, for the period October 2024-July 2025 and has resulted in an economic damage of approximately 12,500,000 (twelve million five hundred thousand) new lek.

"This has come about as a result of the unjust inclusion in the economic assistance scheme of beneficiary families who did not meet the legal criteria for benefit. After the start of the criminal investigation, the number of beneficiary families has decreased, specifically from 320 beneficiary families to 110 families," the Prosecution announced.

The investigations revealed that the officials, in collaboration with each other, fictitiously increased the number of beneficiary families, bypassed legal documentation, and allowed unfair benefits from state funds.
