World Cup 2026: The picture of the 1/16 is formed, here are the qualified teams

The 2026 World Cup is approaching the end of the group stage, and some of the teams that have secured qualification for the round of 16 have already been determined, as well as the teams that have been eliminated from the tournament.

How third-place qualification works

In the new tournament format, the top 2 teams from each group and the best 8 third-place teams advance to the round of 16.

Their ranking is done according to: Points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play (sportsmanlike conduct) and FIFA ranking.

According to current developments, 5 points are considered sufficient for qualification in most groups.

 

Situation in groups

Group A

Mexico qualified as group winners with a clean record and will advance to the round of 16. South Africa secured second place with four points and also advance. South Korea remain in third place with three points and await further results to see if they qualify as one of the best third-place teams. The Czech Republic have been eliminated from the tournament.

Group B

Switzerland has won the group and has secured passage to the 1/16 stage. Canada is in second place and also follows after the victory over South Africa in the last matches. Bosnia and Herzegovina, with four points, is in a very favorable position and has secured qualification as one of the best third-place teams. Qatar has been eliminated.

Group C

Brazil have secured first place in their group and advance to the next round, where they will face one of the teams that qualified as second. Morocco have also qualified and are advancing. Scotland remain in the hunt for third place, while Haiti have been eliminated.

Group D

The USA has secured first place in the group and advances. Australia is in a good position to qualify and could secure second place with a positive result. Paraguay is still in the race for third place, while Turkey has been eliminated.

Group E

Germany won the group and qualified for the round of 16. Côte d'Ivoire is very close to qualifying, while Ecuador and Curaçao remain in the race for the remaining places and a possible third-place finish.

Group F

The Netherlands and Japan are very close to qualifying, with the final matches determining the final standings. Sweden still has a chance of qualifying as third place. Tunisia has been eliminated.

Group G

Egypt and Iran are in strong competition for the top two spots in the group, while Belgium also has a strong chance of qualifying. New Zealand are in danger of elimination and need a maximum result in their final match.
