Bardhi: Refusal of debates, violation of the Assembly's regulations

The head of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, has stated that the majority has rejected the opposition's requests to hold debates in the Assembly regarding the protest and citizens' concerns.

According to Bardhi, the Democratic Party does not claim to represent the protesters, but aims to convey and address their concerns and problems in the Assembly, which, according to him, should be treated with institutional seriousness.

"The DP has listened to and appreciated the concerns of citizens who have been protesting on the boulevard for 26 days. It is a well-known fact that the protests have received the attention of several European parliaments; the only parliament that has not paid any attention to the concerns of citizens in the square is that of our country.

With full responsibility, the DP has submitted a request for urgent interpellation with the Prime Minister in relation to citizens' concerns, has submitted a motion for debate on the role that the Parliament should play in addressing citizens' concerns, and has submitted a motion for debate on the recent EP resolution that sets out "homework" within the framework of the integration process.

"This should have been our work plan, but all three requests were rejected by the Conference of Speakers, without any argument and with their claim that we are trying to become the spokesperson for the protesters. At no point have we claimed to be the spokesperson for the protests, but we cannot act as if we do not live in Albania and for this reason we requested a debate in the Assembly ," said Bardhi.

According to him, similar debates are taking place in European parliaments and other international institutions, while adding that the Albanian Parliament is not paying attention to the situation.

"Such a debate has been held in the EP, in the German Bundestag, and we cannot act as if the protests and citizens do not exist. All three demands are fair and are recognized by the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly," he said.
