British MP mocks Rama: He comments on Britain, but forgets why Albania is

As citizen protests against the government have entered their first month, Prime Minister Edi Rama has faced criticism from outside Albania as well.

British MP Andrew Rosindell has responded to the Albanian Prime Minister's previous statements about Brexit, shifting the debate to the departure of young Albanians from the country.

In a reaction on the X platform, Rosindell recalled Rama's statement, who a few months ago had ironized the consequences of Brexit, saying that Britain "left Europe because it wanted fewer ships, but there are more ships" and "it wanted more investment, but there are less investments."

The conservative MP revealed that during his visit to Tirana last year, he met many young Albanians who, according to him, had confessed to him their desire to leave the country. He added that this trend could increase even more after Albania's integration into the Schengen area.

The British MP also brought to attention the fact that in 2022 Albanians made up the largest group of immigrants who entered Britain illegally by dinghy, raising the question of why so many young people feel compelled to leave their country.

"Prime Minister Rama is free to comment on Britain, just as I am free to comment on Albania. Last year I spoke to many young Albanians in Tirana who told me they wanted to leave the country, which will become even more possible with Albania's entry into Schengen."

In 2022, Albanian nationals were the largest group to arrive illegally by small boats in the United Kingdom.

"The real question is why so many young Albanians felt they had to leave their country in the first place. I will take lessons on sovereignty from the British people, not from a foreign prime minister. Brexit was about democratic self-government and that principle remains as important today as ever,"  the British MP wrote.
