Vance: If the Watergate scandal happened today, it wouldn't bring down any

US Vice President JD Vance has made a statement that has sparked debate, assessing that the famous Watergate scandal would not have the same political consequences in today's climate.

During an event at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in California, Vance said that the figure of former President Richard Nixon should be reevaluated, while calling the fact that the Watergate scandal ended with his resignation excessive.

"Richard Nixon's legacy deserves a reappraisal. If Watergate had happened today, it probably wouldn't have dominated the news for more than 12 hours. To think that such a scandal brought down a president seems unbelievable today," he declared.

Watergate is considered one of the biggest political scandals in U.S. history. It began in 1972, when five people were caught illegally entering the Democratic Party headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington.

Investigations subsequently uncovered a network of wiretapping, political espionage, and attempts to conceal the responsibility of the Nixon administration, leading to the initiation of impeachment proceedings against the president.

Faced with political pressure and the risk of removal from office through impeachment proceedings, Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, remaining to this day the only American president to have left office in this manner.
