Extreme heat wave in France, 55 people die

The extreme heat wave that has swept through France has taken a tragic toll.

At least 55 people have died from the scorching temperatures, with authorities warning that the death toll could rise.

Sports Minister Marina Ferrari told Franceinfo that most of the cases are related to citizens' efforts to escape the record heat that has hit the country.

Currently, 61 departments are under red alert for extreme temperatures, while another 25 are on orange alert. Although some areas are expected to move to a lower alert level over the weekend, meteorologists predict temperatures will reach up to 41 degrees Celsius.

The situation has put the health system under great pressure. Health Minister Stephanie Rist warned that emergency departments are facing a high influx of patients, while hospitals in Paris and the surrounding areas are already reported to be overwhelmed.

Faced with the emergency, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has activated the third-level ORSAN plan, the highest level of mobilization of the health system in France.

Meanwhile, Paris authorities have imposed additional measures to cope with the situation, banning the consumption of alcohol in public places during the hottest hours of the day.
